Housing Starts Plummet in May

The U.S. government is reporting that privately‐owned housing starts in May, 2026 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,177,000, which is 15.4% lower than April’s revised number and is 8.7% lower than one year ago.

May’s rate for buildings with five units or more was 284k.  Privately‐owned housing units authorized by building permits in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,413,000, which is 0.7% lower than April’s revised number and is 0.2% lower than one year ago.  Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 474k in May.
