A recent report on HousingWire says Russell Vought, the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), recently testified before the House Financial Services Committee, arguing that the bureau has exceeded its statutory authority while lawmakers argue over future of the beleaguered agency. According to the report, Vought defended the CFPB’s workforce reductions and regulatory rollback and urged Congress to place the agency under the appropriations process and limit its discretionary authority. The hearing examined the CFPB’s Spring 2026 report that covered activities for Q3 2024 – required by Dodd-Frank.
